Why You Need an Acupuncturist on Your Gynecology Team

You have been to your OB-GYN. You have mentioned the cramping, the irregularity, the bleeding that feels like too much or not enough. And you have probably been told some version of the same thing: this is normal, here is the pill, come back if it gets worse.

But painful periods are not normal. Irregular cycles are not something you just have to accept. Heavy bleeding every month is not just inconvenient, it is exhausting your iron, your energy, and your hormonal reserves.

There is a root cause, and we can support it.

Your OB-GYN and Your Acupuncturist Are Not Doing the Same Job

Your gynecologist is managing your anatomy. Structural concerns, screenings, medication management. They are an essential part of your care and that is not changing.

Your acupuncturist is managing the hormonal and nervous system patterns that are driving your symptoms in the first place. These two perspectives are not in conflict, they are complementary. And together they give you a much more complete picture of what is actually going on.

What Your Symptoms Are Actually Telling You

Painful Cramping

From a Western perspective, painful periods point to elevated prostaglandins and inflammation. From a TCM perspective this is Qi and Blood stagnation, something is blocked. Where there is free flow, there is no pain. Cramping tells us that circulation through the uterus is compromised, whether from inflammation, cold, stress, or stagnation.

Painful periods are common. They are not supposed to be normal. Pain is information, and acupuncture works directly on the circulation and inflammation driving it.

Irregular Cycles

An irregular cycle: one that changes length every month, comes early, comes late, or disappears altogether. This points to inconsistent ovulation. From a Western perspective this often involves cortisol dysregulation, thyroid involvement, or conditions like PCOS. From a TCM perspective this is Liver Qi stagnation, when you are chronically stressed, overworked, or emotionally overwhelmed, the Liver tightens and the cycle becomes unpredictable.

If your period changes every month, your nervous system is involved. This is not just a hormone story. Acupuncture regulates both.

Heavy or Light Bleeding

Heavy bleeding often points to estrogen dominance or low progesterone, your body cannot hold the blood in place. In TCM this is Spleen Qi deficiency, where the holding and containing function of the body is too weak. Light bleeding points to a thin lining, Blood deficiency, poor nourishment. In TCM this is Spleen and Kidney deficiency, your body does not have enough to build with.

Both are your body asking for support. Not a pill to quiet the signal.

What Changes When You Treat the Root

The difference between managing symptoms and actually changing them is significant. Managing symptoms means the bleeding is lighter because you are on hormonal birth control. Changing symptoms means your body is producing and regulating hormones better on its own.

Acupuncture works on the root. It reduces inflammation, improves circulation to the reproductive organs, regulates the hormonal pathways, and calms the nervous system response that is quietly disrupting everything. Women who have suffered through the same cycle patterns for years often see real, lasting change… not because we suppressed what was happening, but because we changed the conditions creating it.

Your cycle is your fifth vital sign. Just like blood pressure and heart rate, it tells us exactly what is happening inside your body. It deserves to be taken seriously and treated that way.

If your period has been trying to tell you something, it is time to listen.
